ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A lawyer in Newfoundland and Labrador is bringing a class-action suit against a website that collects obituaries and reposts them. The statement of claim, which has not been proven in court, alleges that the site managed by Afterlife Network Inc. contains hundreds of thousands of obituaries and photographs copied without permission from the websites of Canadian funeral homes and newspapers. The Jan. 11 document says the reproductions infringe copyright, and that Afterlife hasn’t sought permission from the copyright holders.Lawyer Erin Best is attempting to certify the lawsuit before the Federal Court of Canada. The action says the website generates revenues by displaying the advertising of third party businesses and by permitting users to “light virtual candles and send flowers.”A spokesperson for Afterlife was not immediately available for comment, but the company has previously told CBC that it will edit or delete information from the site on request.Afterlife’s website says that it has become one of North America’s largest databases for obituaries. It also says the firm seeks to inform the public of obituaries that are already on the internet by categorizing them by city. The class action says it is seeking the “maximum relief for each obituary and photograph placed on the domain without permission.”It also asks that the obituaries be taken off the website. It says the obituaries are created “at a time when families and loved ones are at their most vulnerable.“Appropriating obituaries and accompanying photographs for private commercial gain is reprehensible, and requires sanction by this Court.”

asserted that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty He and Siddharth Nath Singh contended that there has been no death due to lack of oxygen supply to Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das father to assist the prosecution in the case A bench of justices V K Tahilramani and M S Karnik issued the notice also to the victim’s father Nisar Bilal seeking his stand on sadhvi’s plea and posted the matter for further hearing in June Facing trial in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has moved the high court against the special NIA court order permitting the victim’s family to assist the prosecution in the trial The anti-terror court had in February this year permitted Bilal the father of a victim who had died in the September 29 2008 blasts to intervene in the case and assist the prosecution in the trial against Sadhvi and ten others Representational image Reuters Nisar had filed an intervening application in the special court in January when it was expected to frame charges against the accused In her petition to the high court Sadhvi has claimed that Nisar’s application was filed with "malafide and ulterior motives" "The appellant (Sadhvi) is already a victim of false implication at the hands of the prosecution She cannot be exposed to any further risk of prejudice in any manner There is absolutely no necessity or purpose for the victim or his family to assist the prosecution" the petition said The petition further alleged that "the special NIA court has erred and has allowed the victim’s father to intervene without proper application of mind" "The order of the special court should be set aside and quashed" the petition sought Sadhvi was arrested in 2008 soon after the blasts and was accused of hatching the conspiracy for blasts and for allowing her scooter to be used in the blasts The NIA which had taken over the case later gave a clean chit to Sadhvi Earlier this week another bench of the high court had granted bail to Sadhvi on a surety of Rs five lakh observing that the allegations against her cannot be said to be prima facie true Six persons were killed and nearly 100 others were injured when a bomb strapped to a motorcycle had exploded in Malegaon on 29 September 2008 Mumbai: The politics surrounding the farm loan waiver refuses to die down as the BJP on Tuesday termed its loan waiver decision as a bold courageous and historic one while the Opposition Congress-NCP slammed the government for the inordinate delay in announcing it File image of Devendra Fadnavis PTI Opening the debate in the legislative council BJP MLC Sujitsingh Thakur termed the Rs 34000 crore Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shetkari Saanman Yojana as "historic" He said that in the last two-and-half years the government has made Rs 40000 crore investment in the agriculture sector so as to make the farmer self-reliant Thakur slammed the previous Congress-NCP government accusing it of making the farmer dependent on the state and forcing them to commit suicide The debate was briefly adjourned for 30 minutes as the opposition raised the objection to the absence of bureaucrats and officials in the officer’s gallery Leading the Opposition charge leader of Opposition in the legislative council Dhananjay Munde accused the government of not being serious on the issue of loan waiver Slamming the government for moving a congratulatory motion he said "the government took three years to announce the decision and that too after 15000 farmers had committed suicides in the state due to bad debt" Tearing apart the government’s claim of it being a historic decision Munde sarcastically said that not a rupee has reached the indebted farmer and the government has splurged Rs 36 lakh on advertisement blitz on its decision "Even now after one-and-half months the government is still undecided on who is entitled to avail loan waiver The government is taking credit for rise in agriculture produce due to good rainfall last year Despite the bountiful harvest the demonetisation proved to be a bad omen for the farmers Exasperated farmers had to go on strike" he said Sena MLCs Anil Parab and Neelam Gorhe supported the government motion after it had in the recent past slammed the government and even threatened to walk out of the government Terming the loan waiver as a "good step" Parab justified the Sena’s aggressive stand as a way to ensure that the farmers are not left to fend for themselves in their hour of crisis Both Parab and Gorhe demanded that the government extend the deadline till31 March 2017 for availing loan waiver to all those farmers who have had debt burden Parab further demanded that the government increase the compensation to farmers who repay their loans regularly to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 25000 as announced by the state Parab clarified that the Sena stood by the government’s decision to ensure that the farmers get their due and their honour restored Gorhe on the other hand demanded that the 30 Jun 30 2016 cut off set by the government for indebted farmers to avail of loan waiver be extended till June 2017 "The government should withdraw the cases filed against agitating farmers" she said She further pointed out that not all farmers can fill the online registration form "The loan waiver decision will be a ray of hope for farmers which keeps their faith alive the Coronation Ball in celebration of King Edward VII George Curzon the then Viceroy of India was hosting arguably the largest party Delhi would ever know But what the world remembers is the Peacock Dress that Lady Curzon wore While the bodice was of embroidered net and gold the skirt was brimming with peacock feathers done in zari The centre of each feather was embellished with the wing casing of a beetle known for its iridescent green colour More than a century later the peacock pattern dressed up the Buckingham Palace Last week at the London residence of UK’s royal family the best of Indian and British culture was celebrated at a reception to mark the launch of the UK-India Year of Culture 2017 London-Bangalore based Studio Carrom developed the imposing peacock projection inspired by Indian dance motifs “We were drawn to the idea of performance and dance as it encompasses a vast wealth of different people and forms The peacock offered an iconic motif which on a larger level could stand for performance The peacock’s plumage display was also reminiscent of firework displays that had the celebratory aspect we were looking for” says Nia Thandapani of Studio Carrom “We focused on finding different dance forms and instruments but specifically wanted those which have strong identifiable forms and movements as this had to be visible and clear on the complex architecture” she adds Formed by graphic designer Thandapani and illustrator Priya Sundram the studio mediates between the east and the west with nostalgia playing a part as well “If you look at our leaflets for the Darbar Music Festival at Ravenna Italy or the V& A (Victoria and Albert Museum) India Festival promotions they represent a certain meeting point between India and the west But if you look at our book project The Thirsty Fish which comprises selected poems by Jalaluddin Rumi or our work with Tara Books you will see the meeting point is different” says Thandapani For the picture book-cum-graphic novel Captain Coconut and the Case of the Missing Bananas by Tara Books Sundaram used close-ups and cinematic tropes as a nod to film noir detective movies The Thirsty Fish on the other hand alludes to various aspects of Rumi and Sufi poetry “The book was approached as though it has been gifted to the reader by someone who was perhaps already a Rumi enthusiast For instance you will find a photo of whirling dervishes and a prayer-card-like piece with images of figures from the text” says Thandapani For their future projects they are working with Bangalore-based Quest
