Community News Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA), along with a delegation of Members of Congress, visited the Southwest border in Texas. The trip included visits to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection station in McAllen, Texas and a Department of Health and Human Services facility where unaccompanied children are being transferred and housed in Lackland, Texas. The delegation also met with local advocates who are assisting in the unaccompanied minors crisis. Rep. Chu released the following statement:“Today, I saw firsthand the humanitarian crisis at our Southwest border and heard directly from law enforcement on the front lines. Seeing the legal process on the ground and hearing the heart-wrenching stories of the children makes it clear – Congress must maintain the due process protections for unaccompanied children in the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act,” said Rep. Chu. “I urge swift Congressional action to approve the supplemental spending necessary to address the desperate situation at the border while leaving legal protections intact.”Since 2011, the number of unaccompanied minors attempting to cross the Southwest border has drastically increased. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) predicts that an estimated 90,000 unaccompanied children will attempt to enter the country by the end of this year. Many of the children attempting to cross into the U.S. are fleeing extremely violent environments in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras – collectively known as the Northern Triangle of Central America. Drug cartel and gang-related activity are the main cause for most of the violence occurring in the region. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as many as 58 percent of the minors could qualify for international protection. Michigan enters its fifth season under Jim Harbaugh with the same questions lingering over the program. Harbaugh has brought steady success back to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are 38-14 under Harbaugh — the eighth best record among Power 5 teams — and have three 10-win seasons in that stretch. The Wolverines, however, have yet to break through to win the Big Ten conference. Harbaugh is 0-4 against rival Ohio State. The latest loss — a 62-39 blowout in Columbus — led to some offseason coaching changes. MORE: Sporting news’ pre-preseason top 25 for 2019Josh Gattis, brought over from Alabama, is the new offensive coordinator. The Wolverines return Shea Patterson and playmaking receivers on offense, but Don Brown’s defense will have questions in 2019. Michigan is ranked No. 10 in Sporting News’ pre-preseason top 25 for 2019. Five-star safety Daxton Hill briefly committed to Alabama before flipping back to Michigan, and five-star defensive lineman Chris Hinton stayed committed the whole time. Both will have a chance to play — and perhaps start — as freshmen. Four-star running back Zach Charbonnet, the No. 4 back in the class, also could play right away. Harbaugh isn’t afraid to let young players make an impact early, and this might be his most talented class yet.Michigan football roster 2019Michigan’s football roster will be updated in the spring and fall here.MORE: Big Ten primerWhat to watch from Michigan in 20191. Will the offense open up? This is the biggest question in Ann Arbor. Harbaugh must ditch the conservative offense, and Gattis promises to run an up-tempo, pro-style spread offense like the one the Crimson Tide used last season with Tua Tagovailoa. There is no question Patterson — who had 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns to seven interceptions — could thrive in that system with the talent Michigan has at receiver. Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tarik Black and Nico Collins all have NFL potential. Peoples-Jones, a former five-star receiver who had eight catching touchdowns last season, could be an All-American in this system if used properly. Peoples-Jones and Collins have missed the spring because of injuries. That’s something to monitor. Nick Eubanks, a tight end who averaged 19.6 yards per catch with limited targets last season, could be a breakout player. Mike Sainristil has impressed in spring practice. Patterson will have options to spread the football around. 2. Who is the running back? Michigan returns most of an offensive line that improved under Ed Warinner last season, but running back is an open competition with the loss of Karan Higdon, who rushed for 1,178 yards and 10 touchdowns. Chris Evans is currently not on the team but could return for fall camp. That leaves an opportunity for Christian Turner, Tru Wilson and perhaps Charbonnet, an early enrollee who is not practicing this spring because of arthroscopic knee surgery. Turner is a good bet to get the first crack at the starting job if Evans does not return by the regular season.3. How will the defense be enhanced? Rashan Gary, Devin Bush, Chase Winovich and David Long are all gone to the NFL. Brown has huge holes to fill on defense, one that allowed an average of 51.5 points in the losses to Ohio State and Florida. Lavert Hill, Khaleke Hudson and Josh Metellus all returned. Josh Uche led the Wolverines with seven sacks last season, and defensive end Luiji Vilain is a breakout candidate generating buzz in spring practice. Devin Gil also and Josh Ross are solid linebackers with experience. Daxton Hill and Hinton could break in right away. This unit will be tested in September in different ways with Middle Tennessee State, Army and Wisconsin. We’ll see what Brown’s defense can do after last season’s disappointing finish.
