The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and Human Rights Training represents Brock University’s final training requirement for accessibility under the province’s law. It must be completed by all faculty and staff by the end of May.In 2010 when the Accessible Customer Service Standard was released, there came with it a requirement to train all staff on the issue of disability and access to goods and services. This was called the Accessible Service Tutorial and it has since been offered on the portal as a requirement for new employees. With the development of the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) there came a second training requirement that deals with the application of Human Rights, the AODA and Human Rights training. In order to meet our legal responsibility, this particular training was launched in 2015 on the SAKAI learning management system so it could be delivered quickly but also so that the training can be updated when required with relevant and timely information. Brock University is now responsible for the delivery of both the Accessible Service Tutorial and the AODA and Human Rights training, as one does not replace the other. The main purpose for conducting training of this sort is to start a discussion about creating a culture shift from viewing disability issues as strictly an accommodation issue to a positive aspect of diversity. If you have any questions regarding the training or would like to talk about accessibility on campus contact Christopher Lytle, AODA Co-ordinator at 905-688-5550 x5454 or via email at [email protected]

announced the president would follow him to the region later this year Anxious Southeast Asian governments are looking for America’s commitment to counter China’s economic and military clout Vietnam’s foreign minister is in Washington this week and the top diplomats of the region’s 10-nation bloc are expected to arrive en masse in early May amid concerns their interests were being crowded out as President Donald Trump prioritizes Mideast counterterrorism traditional alliances in Europe and North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats Pence’s stop in Jakarta on a 10-day swing through the Asia-Pacific meeting with Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo sends a message that Trump’s interests in Asia extend beyond North Korea and the massive US trade imbalance with China It is the Washington is “taking steps to strengthen our partnership with ASEAN and deepen our friendship” Pence said resolving to strengthen economic ties and security cooperation in combating terrorism and in the disputed South China Sea This year marks ASEAN’s 50th anniversary November’s gathering is being held in the Philippines setting the stage for an encounter between two unconventional leaders: Trump and the host Rodrigo Duterte the Philippine president who is sometimes likened to the American leader because of his outspokenness and unashamed populism Duterte’s government welcomed Pence’s announcement that Trump would attend US-Philippine relations are strained over Duterte’s war on drugs and his brash efforts to forge closer ties with China President Barack Obama scrapped a planned meeting last fall after Duterte cursed him Before that Obama engaged Southeast Asia more than any US president since the aftermath of the Vietnam War and made ASEAN summits a virtual fixture in his diplomatic calendar Among Obama’s foreign policy accomplishments: Promoting democratic reform in Myanmar on communist China’s doorstep He stood up albeit unsuccessfully against Beijing’s construction of artificial islands that can give it a strong military foothold in the South China Sea He paved the way for a bigger US military presence in the Philippines where American bases were shuttered 25 years ago Obama also understood the importance of showing up He made nine trips to Southeast Asia became the first sitting US president to visit former adversaries Myanmar and Laos and was first to travel to Malaysia in more than four decades Trump got off on the wrong foot His “America First” rhetoric and abrupt withdrawal from Obama’s pan-Pacific trade pact raised fears of US protectionism hurting the region’s 600 million people They do $225 billion in trade with the US each year Trump’s relationship with Beijing remains unclear and his unorthodox foreign policy has begged the question as to whether he could ease US demands on the South China Sea to win Chinese cooperation on North Korea “The region very much wants to know where the United States is going to stand on the South China Sea and more broadly what its approach to China is going to be” said Amy Searight a former top US defense official for the region Senior State Department official Patrick Murphy told reporters Thursday that the US would continue freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea Those US Navy maneuvers through disputed waters were conducted periodically under Obama but have not occurred since Trump took office three months ago Still the future of economic ties is probably the region’s top concern China is the main trading partner for most of Southeast Asia although the US remains a key source of foreign investment The TPP’s demise leaves an alternative pact as the main avenue for boosting trade among the fast-growing economies China is a part of that negotiation while the US isn’t Trump’s decision to leave TPP “creates a vacuum that China is happy to try to fill” Searight said Trump also is expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam A photograph showing the damage to the side of Jason Little’s poolCredit:DorsetPolice/BNPS She said that the CCTV footage appeared to show Mr Gee carrying something heavy in his right hand as he approached the pool. In an apparent attempt to cover his tracks he then left a note in the Little’s porch, explaining how he had woken in the night to the sound of flowing water and found their garden flooded Mr Gee, who worked in the aviation industry for 25 years, pleaded not guilty to criminal damage, claiming that he had been woken up by his dog barking and had gone out to investigate when he noticed his garden was flooded. He claimed the pool was dilapidated and suggested it emptied after an old tear finally split.Finding Mr Gee guilty, district judge Stephen Nicholls said his evidence lacked consistency and logic. He said: “His account is not credible or believable and I am satisfied he entered the land and caused damage to the pool, causing water to escape.”Mr Gee, who has no previous convictions, was fined £500 and ordered to pay £650 prosecution costs and £250 compensation to Mr Little.Judge Nicholls also issued a restraining order banning Mr Gee from contacting the Littles for five years and from going onto the curtilage of their property.Speaking after the case Mr Little said: “He threatened my children and tried to tell them they were not allowed to use their own garden and said many times they were going to force us to leave. I’m just relieved the judge gave him a restraining order and he won’t be able to make nasty comments to my family anymore.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Disputes between neighbours over noise are not uncommon, but a rift in one Dorset village was so bitter it culminated in a man sabotaging a children’s swimming pool after growing fed up with the excited cries and laughter coming over the garden fence.Stephen Gee, 63, crept into his neighbour’s garden and cut a hole in the metal wall of the pool, causing 4,000 litres of water to gush out.The retired engineer was only caught because his neighbour, a decorated army officer, had installed a covert camera in the garden, capturing Mr Gee’s night-time raid.Jason Little, who won the Military Cross for displaying inspirational leadership in battle in Afghanistan in 2008, returned home after a few days away with his wife Avril to find their pool empty and their garden flooded.A court heard yesterday that when Mr Little reviewed the video from his hidden CCTV camera, he saw his hooded neighbour tiptoeing up his garden path at 4.30am, past his herbaceous border and towards his pool.Mr Gee, a retired engineer, was seen disappearing behind the 10 metre long pool for 16 seconds before re-emerging and sneaking back to his house. Stephen Gee outside Poole Magistrates, DorsetCredit:LeeMcLean/BNPS Poole Magistrates Court heard how the attack in June 2016 was the culmination of a four year dispute between the two neighbours over the noise made when the Little’s two daughters, then aged eight and 10, used the pool.Although the oval swimming pool was already in place when Mr Little and his wife moved into their large detached house in the village of Puxey in 2012 Mr Gee quickly took offence at their children using it.Mr Little, 46, told the court: “Whenever they used the swimming pool, they shouted over the fence at them and would play loud music and stare at them. Before we had CCTV things happened to the swimming pool that I couldn’t explain, so we had cameras installed to the rear of the property.”He said his children had not yet used the pool that summer, but that he had carried out maintenance so they could do so and that when he checked the pool before he left for the weekend the water level was full and there was no leak.PC Charlotte Goddard told the court that the wall of the pool looked as if it had been hit with something heavy and the cut was wider at one end, suggesting it had been struck with an axe blade or similar.
