The victim, a man in his mid-30s, was riding without a seat belt in the right rear seat and was thrown from the 2004 silver Chevy Avalanche, said Officer Wendy Hahn of the California Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released so his family could be notified. The truck, whose driver’s name also was not immediately released, veered onto the right dirt shoulder of the freeway about 2:30 p.m., Hahn said.
