Lots of sports news for April 9, 2013…Wellington boys baseballWellington boys fell to 0-4 losing to Andale/Garden Plain, 9-6 and 4-2.The Crusaders are having a propensity of being unable to finish the games off. In both contests, Wellington went into the seventh inning with either the lead or tied at Sellers Park – only to lose the game in the end.In the first game, Wellington opened with a 3-1 lead, thanks to a Connor Burden RBI double. Andale would comeback to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Wellington broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth when Jalen Macias hit an RBI double and came home on an error. Then Blane Anderson nailed the team’s first home run of the season and gave the Crusaders a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. But then came a disastrous top of the seventh inning. Andale scored six runs to take the lead. Andale would rattle off three consecutive hits… then get a walk… then get hit by a pitch… then reach base on an error. All told in the inning alone Andale had four hits and seven runners on base. Ugh.Wellington looked to avenge that loss in game two, and again was competitive. Andale took a 2-0 lead, but Wellington came back with a run in the third and fifth inning. But in the top of the seventh, the Indians would score two runs to win.The Crusaders, who were much more proficient in game, would get just three hits in game two.One positive for the Crusaders are the errors. They had just one error in both ball games. The Crusaders were an error machine in 2012. Not so much this year.Wellington, now 0-4, will battle Collegiate Thursday there – providing the weather allows it, of course. And, in the 42 games he has played for FC Barcelona this season, Lionel Messi remained Lionel Messi. There are a number of outstanding candidates for the (formerly) prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy presented by France Football magazine since 1956. With the decision announced Monday to cancel the award for 2020, however, all they’re left with is a cool name.“We did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list like ‘trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the COVID-19 health crisis,’” France Football said in their statement. “Protecting the credibility and legitimacy of such an award also means ensuring its flawlessness over time.”MORE: How the coronavirus pandemic might change usIn fact, France Football’s action here will have the opposite impact from its intent. Choosing to ignore the accomplishments of so many great players through such a challenging circumstance diminishes the reputation of the awards. It is not the only trophy presented for the top players in world soccer. The FIFA Best Player award was first presented in 2016, after a six-year merger between the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the Ballon d’Or ended. So the Best Player honor does not have the same history, but there’s been no indication from FIFA that it will cancel its awards for 2020.Other sports have seen fit still to present the individual awards players earned. The National Hockey League will present its prestigious awards for performances encompassing its truncated regular season: the Hart Trophy for MVP, the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, the Vezina Trophy for most outstanding goalie. The NHL has been unveiling the finalists for its major awards during the past week. The National Basketball Association recently announced its awards period will cover from the start of the 2019-20 season until it was suspended March 11, though it will have contending teams finish a regular season and then commence the 2020 playoffs. It might have been a greater challenge for France Football in selecting the top women’s player because the sample sizes generally were smaller, but there were international competitions such as the She Believes Cup and Olympic qualifiers played in 2020, and NWSL is in the final week of its Challenge Cup. Forward Christen Press dominated in the first three months of year with the U.S. Women’s National Team, and Lynn Williams of the North Carolina Courage had a breakout year with her club and the USWNT.France’s Ligue 1 Feminine contested a 16-game season that ended with Lyon as champion. France’s Marie-Antoine Katoto scored 16 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, edging 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hederberg of Lyon for the goal-scoring title. Lyon’s sublime Dzsenifer Marozsan produced 13 assists. Bethany England scored 14 goals in 16 games as Chelsea won the championship of the FA Women’s Super League. Robert Lewandowski played 43 games for Bayern Munich during the 2019-20 season, including six in the UEFA Champions League, and scored 51 goals in all competitions. His production led Bayern to an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title and has them in position to finish the year with three major trophies.Cristiano Ronaldo has 32 goals in 41 games for Juventus, closing in on a Serie A title in Italy and still competing in Champions League. Kylian Mbappe scored 30 goals in 33 games for Paris Saint-German, champions of France’s Ligue 1 and quarterfinalists in the Champions League, which will be completed next month. There were players out there who played great soccer in the time they were allotted. And, in the case of those in the top European men’s leagues and the NWSL, they continued on to play through some of the most trying circumstances of our lifetimes. To suggest the efforts of all these players would “not be worthy” of the Ballon d’Or — that’s how France Football put it — demeans all those who competed before and after the pandemic impacted the sport. And it’s insulting to the intelligence of those who follow the game. The Ballon d’Or no longer is worthy of our attention. It would be fair to say France Football’s condescension has turned the award into the Ballon de Farce.
