Warner and Donley Earn PFL Player of the Week Honors

first_imgAfter the Drake University football team’s defense and special teams led the Bulldogs to a 13-10 victory Saturday at Drake Stadium, it was no surprise that a pair of Bulldogs garnered Pioneer Football League Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors.Junior safety Will Warner (Pella, Iowa) was named the PFL Defensive Player of the Week for a record-setting performance while kicker Danny Donley (Tulsa, Okla.) was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week.Warner led another strong defensive effort that held Marist to fewer than 300 total yards of offense and negative nine yards rushing. Individually, he matched the Drake and PFL single-game record for interceptions in a game with three.The second of his three interceptions was returned 28 yards to set up the game-winning field goal and his third came in the final minute to end Marist’s comeback hopes. On the season, he leads the nation in interceptions with eight and interception return yardage with 223 yards. His season interception total also ties the school record.Warner’s Defensive Player of the Week honor is his second of the season and a league-best fifth this season by the Bulldogs. That game-winning field goal against Marist came off the foot of PFL Special Teams Player of the Week Danny Donley. Donley’s 24-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the contest gave the Bulldogs the final 13-10 advantage. Earlier in the day, Donley converted on a 30-yard field goal and is now a perfect 9-of-9 on field goals this season. With a PAT on Drake’s lone touchdown of the day, he accounted for seven of the Bulldogs’ 13 points in the win.The pair of PFL honorees and their teammates conclude the 2018 this season at Morehead State, Nov. 17.
