‘Green’ Halloween

first_imgBy Aaron LancasterUniversity of GeorgiaThinking “green” on the orange-and-black holiday isn’t always ourfirst notion. But Halloween doesn’t have to be a parade ofplastic decorations headed for crowded landfills. It can remindus of easy ways we can reduce waste year-round.Community costumes. Rather thanbuy a costume your child (or you)will wear once and throw away, make one out of clothes youalready have. Thrift stores and yard sales often have low-costclothing and items suitable for costumes, too. And after theholiday, donate usable clothes and accessories to day carecenters, schools or community theaters.Bag it. Decorate paper grocerysacks with nontoxic paint tocreate your own trick-or-treat bags. Or use canvas bags, pillowcases or reusable buckets to collect goodies year afteryear.Bio decor. Nature intended forapples to be eaten. But you cantransform any you didn’t eat into spooky shrunken heads for yourholiday decor. All you need are some apples, whole cloves, a fewgrains of rice, a cup of lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of salt.Peel the apples, and coat them with the lemon juice and salt toprevent them from browning. Then carefully carve a face into thefruit with a peeler or knife. Insert cloves into the carved eyesocket to make beady eyes. Rice creates the teeth.Put the apples somewhere dry and warm for one to two weeks, andwatch them shrink and distort. If time is short, put them in anoven at a very low temperature.Reduce, Reuse, Redecorate. ReuseHalloween decorations from yearto year. Properly storing decorations not only reduces waste andsaves money, but also preserves the personal value steeped inthese items.Keep it simple. Choose Halloweentreats that use the least amountof packaging or useable items like pencils, pens, small toys orcoins.Teach your children well. Candywrappers often litterneighborhoods after Halloween. Litter is ugly. It’s costly toclean up, too, and could cause ecologically important creaturesto die needlessly after mistakenly eating plastic and other trash.Enjoy the season. Walk, ride abike or use public transportationto Halloween parties or trick-or-treating. If you have to drive, carpool to help reduce traffic and air pollution.Eco-Lanterns. Use rechargeablebatteries to power flashlights, lanterns and decorations to reduce the amount of harmfulmaterials you throw away. They will save money in the long run.Even better are hand-crank and magnetic flashlights, which don’tneed batteries at all. You can order them from catalogs.Discarded batteries produce most of the heavy metals found inhousehold trash. Lead, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, copper and mercurycan be harmful to humans and wildlife.Great Pumpkin. Pumpkin seeds fromjack-o’-lanterns create a tastysnack for two- and four-legged critters alike. Carefully washpumpkin seeds to remove the clinging, fibrous pumpkin tissue. Setthem outside in a sunny place to feed wildlife. For humans, dry pumpkin seed treats in the sun, a dehydrator (1to 2 hours at 115-120 degrees Fahrenheit) or an oven (on “warm”for 3 to 4 hours). Stir them often to avoid scorching them.Once the seeds are dry, toss them with oil, salt and otherseasonings. Roast them in a preheated oven at 250 degrees for 10to 15 minutes.Hollowed-out pumpkins filled with ears of Indian corn, seeds, apple cores and skins and cleaned pumpkin seeds make a festivefeast for wildlife. After Halloween. Recycle pumpkins, shrunken apple heads, strawused for scarecrows, hay bales and any other organic material incompost piles.Compost improves the texture and quality of poor soils whilereducing waste. Backyard bins are much more efficient thanbagging leaves for collection.Contact your county Extension Service to learn more aboutcomposting. YouTube Expanding On-Demand Movie Service with Mainstream Hollywood Titles

first_imgAccording to a report from the Hollywood-tracking news outlet The Wrap, Google’s YouTube will soon be expanding its on-demand movie rental service to include mainstream Holloywood films. Major movie studios including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers and Universal are all said to be on board, as are a number of independent studios. The sources cited by The Wrap are “movie executives with knowledge of the deals,” but YouTube itself said it would not comment on rumor and speculation. An Expanded StoreA YouTube spokesperson would only say this, when asked about the on-demand streaming service:“We’ve steadily been adding more and more titles since launching movies for rent on YouTube over a year ago, and now have thousands of titles available.”The spokesperson is referring to YouTube’s store, available here at: http://www.youtube.com/store. The service launched last year, offering movie rentals for $2 or $3 dollars apiece. The files are available for streaming, not download, similar to the videos provided by Netflix or Hulu’s streaming services.Currently, there are only a small number of well-known titles in the YouTube Store. These are prominently featured on the site’s homepage, making the service appear more well-stocked than it actually is. But dig a little deeper and you won’t find much more to choose from, unless you like really B-to-D grade films and direct-to-video offerings. Launching in WeeksThe upcoming deal, which has now been confirmed by AllThingsD’s Peter Kafka as well, would change that. He adds that while Sharon Waxman’s report from The Wrap pinned the launch date as being “as early as next week or next,” he heard that the time frame was “weeks, but not months.”Those not participating in the current deal, Kaftka notes, are New’s Corp.’s Fox and Paramount, whose corporate parent Viacom is still suing Google regarding YouTube copyright issues and claims.Cloud Locker PlannedKafka also cited one source who said that this on-demand movie rental service was just the beginning for Google’s vision. In the future, Google wants users to be able to purchase movies and store them in an online cloud locker, a service that sounds strikingly familiar to the one Amazon itself just launched. But even if the service does launch as expected, the question many in the media are now asking is whether or not the business model is viable. Netflix, which offers streaming movies, not rentals and purchases, is booming, having nearly doubled its net quarterly profits from last year. It also added 3.3 million subscribers in Q1 2011. Would streaming individual rentals and purchases attract a large enough audience to make the expanded YouTube service a success? Or will consumers still choose Netflix instead? U.S. To Microsoft: I See You Might Be Trying To Bribe Someone

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… brian proffitt Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… U.S. regulators are investigating software giant Microsoft and its partners over alleged bribery schemes in China, Italy and Romania, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are reportedly both investigating allegations that Microsoft received kickbacks in these three nations. No formal charges have been filed. In China, an executive in Microsoft’s subsidiary allegedly ordered an employee to “offer kickbacks to Chinese officials in return for signing off on software contracts, according to people familiar with the matter and people briefed on the internal probe,” the Journal reported. The feds are also investigating suspicions that Microsoft offered kickbacks to get deals with Romania’s Ministry of Communications, as well as using partners in Italy to lavish gifts on Italian procurement officials.Microsoft’s response to the news has been as detailed as it can be, given it’s the focus of an active investigation.“The matters raised in the Wall Street Journal are important, and it is appropriate that both Microsoft and the government review them. It is also important to remember that it is not unusual for such reviews to find that an allegation was without merit,” Microsoft deputy general counsel John Frank wrote in a company blog post today.Frank noted that such probes are not automatically guaranteed to generate actual charges. Corruption allegations are common, he argued, particularly for multinational corporations. He also acknowledged that in a company as large as Microsoft, problems will sometimes occur:In a company of our size, allegations of this nature will be made from time to time. It is also possible there will sometimes be individual employees or business partners who violate our policies and break the law. In a community of 98,000 people and 640,000 partners, it isn’t possible to say there will never be wrongdoing.Frank emphasized that Microsoft plans to cooperate fully with “any government inquiries.”Image courtesy of Shutterstockcenter_img Related Posts IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Tags:#Microsoft last_img read more

Her only other win over a No. 1 player came against Simona Halep at Wimbledon last year. With two-handed groundstrokes from both sides, Hsieh was the steadier player from the baseline against Osaka. Williams, 37, still hasn’t won a tournament since the 2017 Australian Open, before she took a break of more than a year to become a mom.
