Google Maps Now Makes Getting on the Right Train Easier

first_imgOne More Feature That Sets Google Apart from the CompetitionWhile this is only a small addition to Google’s mapping product, the constant drumbeat of new features and partnerships that Google Maps announces on an almost-weekly basis makes it hard for competitors like Bing Maps to keep pace. Even though Bing Maps offers a very competitive set of mapping and directions features that still outperform Google Maps in many ways, Google is currently offering a more comprehensive set of features. Thanks to Google’s strong emphasis on getting local businesses to update their own data in Google Maps, the company is also able to offer better results for local searches.Given Microsoft’s renewed focus on Bing – and the Web in general – it would be wrong to count Bing Maps out, but for the time being, it looks like it will be hard for Microsoft to catch up with Google. Earlier this month, Google announced the addition of biking directions to Google Maps. Today, Google is also enhancing its maps by adding more data about local public transit options. Whenever you search for a train station in Google Maps, you can now see a list of transit lines that service this station. Google Maps will also display the next scheduled departure times for every line.We have to say, however, that while this feature worked great for the example given in Google’s blog post (“Zurich HB“) and most of the larger transit stations in big cities like New York, finding the right name for smallertrain stations can be rather frustrating. U.S. To Microsoft: I See You Might Be Trying To Bribe Someone

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… brian proffitt Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… U.S. regulators are investigating software giant Microsoft and its partners over alleged bribery schemes in China, Italy and Romania, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are reportedly both investigating allegations that Microsoft received kickbacks in these three nations. No formal charges have been filed. In China, an executive in Microsoft’s subsidiary allegedly ordered an employee to “offer kickbacks to Chinese officials in return for signing off on software contracts, according to people familiar with the matter and people briefed on the internal probe,” the Journal reported. The feds are also investigating suspicions that Microsoft offered kickbacks to get deals with Romania’s Ministry of Communications, as well as using partners in Italy to lavish gifts on Italian procurement officials.Microsoft’s response to the news has been as detailed as it can be, given it’s the focus of an active investigation.“The matters raised in the Wall Street Journal are important, and it is appropriate that both Microsoft and the government review them. It is also important to remember that it is not unusual for such reviews to find that an allegation was without merit,” Microsoft deputy general counsel John Frank wrote in a company blog post today.Frank noted that such probes are not automatically guaranteed to generate actual charges. Corruption allegations are common, he argued, particularly for multinational corporations. He also acknowledged that in a company as large as Microsoft, problems will sometimes occur:In a company of our size, allegations of this nature will be made from time to time. It is also possible there will sometimes be individual employees or business partners who violate our policies and break the law. In a community of 98,000 people and 640,000 partners, it isn’t possible to say there will never be wrongdoing.Frank emphasized that Microsoft plans to cooperate fully with “any government inquiries.”Image courtesy of Shutterstockcenter_img Related Posts IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Tags:#Microsoft last_img read more

You Don’t Train a Dog Without Also Training the Owner

first_imgI once had a dog that was very energetic. I decided he needed training. The trainer insisted that I attend the training, something that was difficult for me to do at the time. You cannot have a dog trained for you. There are people who will train your dog, but once they return the dog to you, you will not have anything near the same level of obedience from your dog when compared to the trainer. If you ask the dog trainer why you have to be there when they train the dog, they may not tell you that they are really training you, but that is certainly what they are doing. The truth is that you are not very good with dogs.I am not comparing salespeople to dogs or sales managers to their owners. I am using this analogy to make a very simple, very important point about training and development. That point is that it is the person responsible for the behavior of those in their charge. If you train a salesforce and believe that this by itself will be enough to make a difference in your results, you are overestimating what training can accomplish. The results don’t come from the training; the results come from the execution after the training. After you have trained your team, the execution becomes the responsibility of the person who leads them, their sales manager. The sales manager is responsible for ensuring that what has been trained is executed. For many, this is a new set of more effective behaviors to replace older, less effective choices. This change of behaviors isn’t something that is easy to accomplish, nor does it happen overnight, making the sales manager the critical factor in any kind of real transformation or improvement (as if the role isn’t difficult enough already). When your sales managers aren’t involved in training with their teams, it’s a sign that the training isn’t going to produce the best possible results. More still, when the sales management team isn’t also trained, you are jeopardizing the future results that the training is supposed to produce. If your training isn’t producing the result you want, don’t look at the training, don’t look at the people being trained, look instead at their leaders. If they haven’t been trained to lead any transformation, you will have found the root cause. Essential Reading!
